In the seemingly endless world of podcasts, there is one that stands out in particular: “Mensch Digi!”. This podcast is not only a source of informative content, but also a unique format that makes the digital world accessible to the whole family. We are delighted that we were able to take over the audio production for this podcast. The special hosts are father Tom and his 10-year-old daughter.

What is it about?

“Mensch Digi!” is more than just a podcast; it’s a digital adventure that spans 12 weeks. Each week, a new episode covers a multifaceted topic of the digital world, from internet basics to social media, apps and gaming. In snappy 20 minutes, the two charming hosts, Theresa and Tom, share their thoughts, discussions and family tasks.

The faces behind the microphone: Theresa and Tom

Theresa, the 10-year-old daughter who wants to be a designer one day, brings a refreshing perspective to the German podcast landscape. With her love of painting and her playful approach to digital topics, she creates a connection with younger listeners. Tom Inden-Lohmar, her father – an expert on communication – perfectly complements the dynamic. With four children and three grandchildren, he not only has family expertise, but also a deep insight into the challenges and opportunities of the digital era.

Who is the podcast suitable for?

“Mensch Digi!” is for anyone who wants to find their way in the digital world in an entertaining way. Parents, grandparents and children can learn and discuss together. The family tasks at the end of each episode not only promote understanding, but also intergenerational communication.

What makes the podcast special?

The special feature of “Mensch Digi!” is not only the content, but also the unique connection between father and daughter. This family touch creates a warm atmosphere and makes the podcast accessible for all age groups. The short, concise episodes are perfectly dosed to fit into the busy everyday life of a family.

Overall, “Mensch Digi!” isn’t just one podcast episode after another; it’s a journey through the digital world, led by a family that understands the fun and importance of learning together.

Tom, how did the idea of starting a podcast about the digital world with your daughter come about?

Tom: It all started with the typical child’s question: “Dad, when will I finally get a mobile phone? Everyone in my class has one”. That got the ball rolling, because the basic idea was to give Theresa the necessary knowledge for the digital world beforehand.

What challenges do you see for families in the digital era and how do you try to tackle these in your podcast?

Tom: I fear that the knowledge gap between parents and children is widening. Most parents already don’t know anything about social media and gaming, for example. This will lead to children no longer talking to their parents about it because “they don’t know anything about it anyway”. And that will be the beginning of the end.

Theresa brings a youthful and creative perspective. How does her perspective influence the discussions and content of your podcast?

Tom: Very decisively. We made a conscious decision not to have a fixed manuscript. I prepare for the recording of the episodes, but Theresa goes into the studio almost unprepared. So I’m always surprised by her view of things.

What personal experience particularly impressed or surprised you during the recordings?

Tom: Quite pragmatically: how exhausting a recording is. Especially for Theresa. We had actually planned to record 5 of the 20-minute episodes per studio day. But we were both really tired and exhausted after 3 episodes. That was a real learning experience.

What would you like listeners to take away from “Mensch Digi!” and what importance do you attach to intergenerational communication on digital topics within families?

Tom: My dream would be for us to initiate a weekly “digital future lesson” in families with our podcast. As a fixed ritual. First listen to the podcast together, then talk about it and visit our Metaverse Academy “House of Digi” and learn about it in a playful way.
